La Crosse, MN (KROC-AM News) - The protective vest worn by a La Crosse Police Officer may have saved his life over the weekend.

A news release from the La Crosse Police Department says officers responded to a domestic disturbance around 3 PM Saturday and were informed the subject of the complaint, 34-year-old Allen Kruk, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant. The statement indicates one of the responding officers made contact with Kruk at the rear of his ex-wife’s home and the La Crosse man responded by pulling out a handgun.

The officer and Kruk then exchanged gunfire and one of the bullets struck the officer in an area of his chest covered by his protective vest. Officials reported Kruk was hit by multiple bullets. Both men were transported by ambulance to a La Crosse Hospital, where the officer was treated and released. At last report, Kruk was still hospitalized but information about his medical condition has not been released.

The incident is being investigated by the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigations. The officer involved, who has not been identified, has been placed on paid leave while the investigation is ongoing.
