The safety initiative will run from March 13 through March 23, which lines up with a statewide effort involving the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation. The campaign coincides with increased social gatherings, parades, and bar traffic often associated with the holiday.

Law enforcement officials say the focus of the campaign will be on drivers impaired by alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs, including certain prescription medications that can impact a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely.

Increased Traffic Enforcement Planned

During the enforcement period, officers will be actively patrolling for signs of impairment while also increasing enforcement of other traffic safety laws.

Authorities say drivers can expect stricter monitoring for:

  • Impaired driving
  • Seat belt violations, especially during nighttime hours
  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Other moving violations

Law enforcement agencies note that seat belt usage typically drops at night, making it a particular focus during the campaign.

Safety Officials Urge Smart Choices During Celebrations

Officials are urging residents attending St. Patrick's Day celebrations to plan ahead before heading out. Drivers are encouraged to designate a sober driver, use ride services, or take public transportation.
