Illinois Connection in the #1 Movie at the Box Office? Not Quite

For as much as I love movies, there are times when pertinent info slips between the cracks, making me think I don't love them as much as I say I do.

A Fictional Illinois Town That Doesn’t Exist

Then again, maybe it's because the town featured in the #1 movie in America isn't a real Illinois town, per NBC 5 in Chicago, but a fictional one, which made it hard for me to follow along.

‘Weapons’ and the Mystery of Maybrook, Illinois

You see, Weapons, the biggest flick at the box office, and Zach Creggers' sophomore follow-up to Barbarians, is set in the town of Maybrook, Illinois.

Why Wasn’t ‘Weapons’ Filmed in Illinois?

Maybrook ain't real. Why movies make up these fake towns is beyond me, but I guess that's not the point. Anyway, Cregger and Warner Bros. didn't film Weapons, the movie starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, in Illinois, Chicago, Rockford, the suburbs, or anywhere else in the Land of Lincoln, so it makes even less sense.

Filming Locations Revealed: Georgia, Not the Midwest

Time Out Worldwide says filming was done in Georgia, mainly in the Atlanta area, in 2024. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have the #1 movie in America, based in Illinois, actually filmed in the state? That would have been cool. Anyway, I still want to see it. Weapons is sitting at a stellar 94% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes right now.
