Illinois Fishing Licenses for 2026 Now on Sale, Supporting Conservation and Outdoor Recreation
Residents of Illinois know that spring isn't far away now that 2026 fishing licences are available to purchase, directly supporting conservation and fishing programs across the state.
Affordable Access to Illinois Waters in 2026
Illinois anglers can officially gear up for the new season, according to a press release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
Fishing licenses are on sale now from the IDNR, and they are one of the most affordable options in the country.

A standard, non-discounted resident fishing license costs just $15, with licenses from 2025 remaining valid through March 31, giving anglers time to transition before the new season fully takes effect.
In the state of Illinois, anyone age 16 or older must carry a valid fishing license, though exemptions do apply for active-duty military and individuals with disabilities. Licenses and required stamps are available online and through department-authorized vendors across the state.
Funding Fisheries and Future Generations
According to IDNR Chief of Fisheries Mike McClelland, the purchase of a fishing license goes far beyond access to our lakes and rivers. It directly supports fisheries research, hatchery operations, habitat improvements, invasive species prevention, and outdoor education initiatives.
The agency's Division of Fisheries is funded primarily through license and stamp sales, so every $15 purchase helps sustain sport fishing opportunities and strengthens Illinois' outdoor economy.

Additional funding is provided through the Sport Fish Restoration Program, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The program distributes funds to states based on land area and fishing license sales, using federal excise taxes collected on fishing equipment and motorboat fuel.
