When it comes to foods that are unique to Minnesota, just which one fits your personality best? We have the answer!
Minnesota may be the Land of 10,000 Lakes but it could just as easily be the Land of 10,000 different types of foods someone not from here doesn't understand. We have a bevy of unique-to-Minnesota foods that have become a way of life pretty much only here in our fair state, most of which seem odd to those who haven't lived here and experienced them firsthand.
For instance, Erik Tormoen over at Minnesota Monthly wrote an excellent piece last year on the history behind Minnesota's Most Iconic Foods. It covers just about every piece of culinary history here in the North Star State, and includes the background on how the following foods became linked with Minnesota:
- Booya
- Bundt cake
- Hot dish
- Hot Dago
- Hot Beef Commercial
- Iron Range Porketta
- Jello Salad
- Jucy Lucy
- Lefse
- Lutefisk
- Pasties
- Walleye
- Wild rice
Many of those unique-to-Minnesota dishes would seem downright foreign to someone who grew up in another part of the country and had never been here, right? Of course, some of those foods are more well-known in certain parts of our state, which also makes sense.
In fact, the state of Minnesota website notes our state stretches 406 miles from north to south, and 358 miles from east to west. It's big enough that 'if you drive from the Canadian border on the north to the Iowa border on the south, you may think you are visiting several states and going through at least two seasons on the way,' the site says.
