Super Bowl LVIII is set for Sunday and will likely feature several new commercials. None of them, though, will be as good as this one, which was produced right here in Minnesota.

After sitting the past few years out during the pandemic, several big-name advertisers came back with brand-new commercials during last year's Super Bowl in Arizona. It's a trend that's expected to continue this year too, as Super Bowl LVIII (that's 58, in case you don't speak Roman Numerals) gets rolling for the first time ever from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

And those firms buying commercials during the game will be paying dearly for that air time, too. This Investor Place story says CBS, the network broadcasting the Super Bowl this year, is charging around $7 million for a 30-second commercial this year. That fee, while incredibly high, is similar to rates that Fox charged in 2023.  Let's hope the entertainment factor is equally big.

If you want a sneak peek, some advertisers (like Uber Eats and M&M) have already put their commercials online. Some look kind of clever, though none of them seem as good as this classic Super Bowl commercial that's still my favorite-- and it's one that was produced right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

The commercial I'm talking about is now over 20 years old (24, in fact.) It made its debut during Super Bowl XXXIV, back in January of 2000. That was the year the Rams were also involved (they beat the Titans), and it was also the year a lot of 'dot com' companies bought commercials during the Big Game.

One of them was the firm, Electronic Data Systems, or EDS. Their commercial, ‘Cat Herders’, was described by an advertising trade magazine like this:

“Cowboys talk about their life herding cats, describing the challenges of taking domesticated kitties (as opposed to longhorns) through the open country to their destination at the ranch.”

If you have cats, like we do, you'll no doubt get a kick out it. And, it's extra cool in that it was produced right here in the North Star State by a Minnesota firm, too– at the ad agency, Fallon, in Minneapolis.
