Disturbing Letter Leads to Investigation

A neighborhood conflict in Hudson, Florida, escalated into a shocking case of animal cruelty. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office says a woman contacted authorities after finding a disturbing letter in her mailbox on Saturday. The letter, allegedly written by her neighbor, Craig Vogt, detailed how he killed two of his own pet peacocks.

The woman told deputies that Vogt’s peacocks often roamed freely in his yard, and she would occasionally feed them. According to investigators, Vogt had previously threatened to kill the birds if she continued feeding them. The letter confirmed his threats, graphically describing how he used a knife to cut the birds’ necks, drained their blood, and cooked them for dinner.

Confession and Arrest

Deputies confronted Vogt about the letter, and according to the criminal complaint, he admitted to killing the birds “out of spite” because of ongoing disagreements with his neighbor. He also described how he fried the birds in a pan and ate them.

Vogt was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty involving excessive pain and death. Court records state that he also threatened to kill the rest of his peacocks after being released from jail to prevent anyone else from caring for them.

Court Appearance and Bond Set

Vogt made his first court appearance in Pasco County, where a judge ordered him held on a $25,000 bond. He has been assigned a public defender. As of now, he remains in the Pasco County Jail, unable to post bond.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case.
