Iowa One Of Eight States Suing OpenAI Over ChatGPT’s “Harms To Users”

The mess that is ChatGPT is in an actual mess now.

Ah ChatGPT, the only thing to validate you more than your psycho best friend. We all know (hopefully) you can't take anything AI says seriously but now a lawsuit filed by 8 states is coming after the platform.

Individually, Iowa and 7 other states are suing OpenAI, ChatGPT's owner, over the harms the chatbot has caused to children.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said at a news conference:

OpenAI, they wanted to be the first to market. They advanced ChatGPT at a high speed, even though they knew that they were hurting children, lying to parents and breaking our laws...Everyone must follow the law.

ChatGPT is no stranger to issues. As Bird brought up, the platform is accused of coaching a person to commit suicide, aiding a school shooter, and giving dangerous medical advice that led to the overdose and death of a Texas teenager.

Last month, OpenAI launched a restricted ChatGPT model for teenagers 13-18 but that doesn't stop the company from catching heat. OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said in response to the backlash that the company has taken "extensive steps we’ve taken in response to incidents of misalignment. We’ve strengthened safeguards across our research systems, continued a broader review of model activity, provided notifications to affected organizations, and published our findings".

The lawsuit cites research that suggests the platform is contributing to 3 issues:

• “degrading critical thinking skills”
• "encouraging paranoias and delusions"
• "promoting unhealthy behaviors and relationships"

Kansas (another state suing OpenAI) Attorney General Kris Kobach said:

Many in Congress appear not particularly willing to oppose any significant restraint on the corporations engaged in AI...That means AI companies are effectively asked to police themselves.

Though the problems span wide, this lawsuit is mainly focused on the dangers to children that ChatGPT can suggest.
