But where do you go when you live in Northern Illinois if you suddenly decide you need to get some ski jumping in this winter?
Ski jumping isn’t exactly a backyard hobby, but our area of the Midwest has a surprisingly vibrant scene, and a has a few venues you can actually visit and learn from without flying halfway across the world. Whether you want a spectator road trip to see big jumps and competitions or a weekend getaway to give it a try yourself, there are several spots close to Northern Illinois worth checking out.

If watching ski jumping in the Winter Olympics has you itching to give it a shot yourself, you don’t have to head all the way up north to Wisconsin to start. In fact, the closest legitimate ski jumping venue to Northern Illinois is right here in the state.
Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove, Illinois:
According to their website, Norge Ski Club, founded in 1905 by a group of Norwegians who lived in and around Chicago, is the oldest, continuously open ski club in the United States. At Norge you’ll find multiple jumps of varying sizes, from small beginner hills to larger scaffolds used in serious competition, and a welcoming environment for newcomers.
If you just want to watch some jaw‑dropping flights instead of jumping yourself, Norge’s popular annual winter tournaments (and their fall “Jumptoberfest” event) bring in jumpers from around the country, making it an absolute must-go if you’re curious about the sport.

The vibe here is extremely grassroots and family‑friendly, with plenty of events throughout the winter and even summer activities like Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.
