See If You Qualify For The $117M Comcast Data Breach Settlement
I have a friend who is constantly disappointed when he hears about a settlement being paid out to (pick your group of people) by (insert company that wants all this to go away) because the company did (insert bad or illegal thing here) and wants to throw some money at the problem so it disappears.
But my friend is never in the group of people that qualify for a payout. However, you may be for this one.
Illinois residents who were Comcast customers in 2023 may be eligible to claim a share of a massive $117.5 million settlement tied to a nationwide data breach, and the window to act is now open.
The settlement stems from an October 2023 cybersecurity incident that exposed the personal information of roughly 31 million Comcast (Xfinity) customers. Hackers exploited a vulnerability in third-party software, gaining access to sensitive data like names, contact details, dates of birth, and in some cases partial Social Security numbers.
While Comcast denies any wrongdoing, the company agreed to the settlement to resolve multiple class-action lawsuits alleging it failed to adequately protect customer data.
Let's Get Into Who Qualifies And What You Could Get
If you’re in Illinois and were a Comcast customer who received a data breach notification around December 2023, there’s a good chance you’re included. The settlement applies to current and former customers whose information may have been compromised.
Even if you’re unsure, you can check your eligibility through the settlement website or by using a claim ID from your notification letter.
The answer to what you could get depends on your situation.
- Up to $10,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses tied to the breach (like fraud, identity theft, or credit monitoring costs)
- Up to $150 for time spent dealing with the issue (calculated at $30/hour)
- Around $50 as a flat payment if you don’t claim specific losses
In addition, affected customers can receive free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for several years.
Here's What To Do
To receive any payout, you must file a claim because this is not automatic. Claims can be submitted online or by mail, but you’ll need to act before the August 14th, 2026 deadline.
There are a couple of other important dates to keep in mind:
- June 1st, 2026: Deadline to opt out or object
- July 7th, 2026: Final court approval hearing
For Illinois residents affected by the breach, this settlement could mean a modest check or significantly more if you experienced real financial harm. But the key is taking action. If Comcast notified you about the 2023 breach, it’s worth a few minutes to see what you may be entitled to.
