Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The City of Rochester has prepared requests for next year’s Minnesota legislative session to help fund several major infrastructure projects, but officials note that the bonding bill passed during the recently concluded special session includes funding for improvements to a popular city park.

According to a city news release, the $700 million bonding bill allocates $650,000 in state funds for the renovation and expansion of the skate park at Silver Lake Park. The project is part of a broader $10 million plan that also includes the construction of a new aquatics center adjacent to the skate park.

“Everyone in our community needs safe, welcoming places to gather and connect — especially our youth,” said Parks & Recreation Director Paul Widman. “The current facility needs an upgrade to continue fulfilling this need and to ensure it remains a vibrant, inclusive space.”

The City of Rochester website estimates the skate park expansion and improvements will cost $1.4 million.

Construction work tied to the new aquatics center began last fall with the demolition of the old Silver Lake Swimming Pool. Work on that project, along with several other park improvements, will continue through the summer and fall. A grand opening for the new aquatics facility and other enhancements is scheduled for next year.

Minnesota Lawmakers Approved $650,000 For Silver Lake Skate Park Project

Most of the funding for Silver Lake Park improvements comes from the park property tax levy approved by voters five years ago. Additional support has been provided through City Council allocations, various grants, and the newly awarded state bonding dollars.

The city's request includes parking upgrades with solar panels at the Rochester International Airport, sanitary sewer projects, and planning for the future reconstruction of Civic Center Drive and a segment of Broadway through downtown Rochester.
