Rochester in Heat Advisory Today-Excessive Heat Warning on Monday
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The National Weather Service has now issued an excessive heat warning for the Rochester area.
The warning, which covers the entire southeastern corner of the state and a portion of western Minnesota, will be in effect in the Rochester area from 1 PM until 8 PM on Monday. A heat advisory is in effect today from 1 until 8 PM.
The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s across the region this afternoon with heat index readings in the mid-90s to around 100-degrees. On Monday, temperatures in the Rochester area could reach the mid-90s with the possibility of heat index readings as high as 110-degrees.
An excessive heat warning is already in effect across the Twin Cities area and the sections of western Minnesota. People living in those areas and people attending the Minnesota State Fair are being told to expect dangerously hot conditions with high humidity and heat index readings between 105 and 110-degrees.
The City of Rochester and Olmsted County issued an advisory on Sunday reminding residents and visitors of ways to "beat the heat."
The Rochester Public Library is open until 6 PM on Sunday and from 10 AM until 8 PM on Monday. Rochester Public Transit is activating the "Cool Place to Be" program. It allows people seeking refuge from the hot weather to receive free rides on air-conditioned RPT buses. Anyone wanting to take advantage of the program is asked to inform the driver that you are looking for a "cool place to be" when boarding the bus.
Foster Arend Park Beach is open until 8 PM today, Cascade Lake Beach will be open until dusk this evening, and the swimming beach at Chester Woods Park is open until 6 PM. All three locations are open to the public with free admission.
The Rochester Salvation Army Community Center will be open from 8 AM until 4 PM on Monday.
Public health officials also remind everyone to take care by staying hydrated with plenty of water and utilizing air conditioning. Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows rolled down.
