For some annual events that happen here in Minnesota, they become more than just a yearly event. They are places for healing, places for remembrance, and reminders that even in the darkest moments, there is still light.

For many families across Central Minnesota, the 'Let The Sunshine Run' in Cold Spring has been exactly that, and this year, it will be the final run.

A RUN BORN FROM LOVE

The 'Let The Sunshine Run' began after an unimaginable loss.

Jonathon Robbins was described as smart, creative, artistic, loving, and a fiercely protective big brother. He lit up the world just by being in it. His mom often recalls his beautiful green eyes and thick hair, but most importantly, he was her sunshine.

HIS LAST STATEMENT TO HIS FAMILY

Before his passing, Jonathon made a poignant statement that his family will never forget: he didn’t want to leave this world worse than when he entered it.

After losing him to suicide, his family made a powerful decision: they would ensure that it didn’t happen. 'Immediately after his death, I knew that I needed to do something to make this world a better place because he lived.  I never wanted him to think that this world was worse off because he lost his battle with mental illness,' said his mother, Kathy Robbins.

They created the Sunshine Run not only to honor Jonathon but also to bring hope, start conversations, and remind others that no one is alone.

WHY THIS IS THE FINAL YEAR OF THE 'LET THE SUNSHINE RUN'

As meaningful as this event has been, it has also required immense dedication.

After years of pouring their hearts into it, the family has made the difficult decision to conclude the event on their own terms. Life has taken beautiful turns, with two grandchildren, whom they wish to spend more time with. They also want their other children to feel no pressure to carry on the event in the future.

So, this final Let The Sunshine Run is about finishing strong and celebrating everything it has meant.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE

If there is one truth the Sunshine Run has always conveyed, it is that you are not alone.

Whether you have lost someone to suicide or are quietly struggling yourself, there is nothing to be ashamed of. There is always hope.

Year after year, this event has helped break the silence surrounding mental health, providing space for individuals to share their stories, say names out loud, and keep the memories of their loved ones alive. And that support does not have to end with the run.

THIS YEAR'S THEME - 'BECAUSE THEY LIVED'

For those attending the Sunshine Run for the first time, one memorable aspect stands out: the entire course is lined with memory signs, each honoring someone deeply loved and missed. Participants are encouraged to carry their loved one’s sign along the route and bring it across the finish line one last time.

ONE LAST CHANCE TO BE PART OF SOMETHING SPECIAL

This is not just a race; it is a tribute, a conversation, and a reminder that every life mattered and continues to do so.

Even though this is the final 'Let The Sunshine Run', its message will endure.

Talk about mental health. Say their names. Share their stories.

Because the world is better for having had them in it.
