Small Wisconsin City Claims $1 Million Powerball Winner Wednesday

It's always great when someone close to the Northland wins major cash playing the Powerball, and it's even better when a winning ticket is sold in a small community and that's just what happened this week.

Going into Wednesday night, the Powerball jackpot had reached an estimated $146 million, with an estimated cash value of $70.3 million.

While nobody won the Powerball jackpot when the numbers were drawn at 9:59 p.m., someone in a small Wisconsin town near the Twin Ports did become a millionaire.

The winning numbers for the January 24 drawing were 1, 5, 32, 50, and 64 and the Powerball number was 8. To win $1 million, you'd need to match 5 of the 5 numbers, but not the Powerball number.  You're basically one number away from scoring $146 million, but I don't think anyone would complain about winning a cool $1 million.

While we don't yet know who won $1 million, the Wisconsin State Lottery confirmed Thursday that a $1 million winning Powerball ticket was purchased in Cumberland, Wisconsin, about 100 miles away from the Twin Ports in Barron County.

The city is located partially within the Town of Cumberland and had a population of 2,170 in the 2010 census

The ticket was purchased at Cumberland Cenex, located at 2104 Caroline Street.

The next Powerball drawing will occur at 9:59 p.m. on Saturday, January 27. The current estimated jackpot is $164 million, with a cash value of $78.8 Million, but that number is likely to grow before the drawing.
