I Saw This Floating In The Harbor And Had No Idea What It Was
I was out on the boat with some friends in the St. Louis Harbor last Friday afternoon for what I call "The Duluth Superior Tour." My friends were visiting from Montana, and I thought I'd show them the Twin Ports from the water. We departed Loon's Foot Landing and made our way down to Bayfront, then under the Aerial Lift Bridge, and then back on Lake Superior to Wisconsin Point. It's about an hour-and-a-half tour, and as long as it's not too windy, it's a chance to show them Lake Superior up close.
When we approached Pier B Resort, I saw what looked like a giant inner tube floating in the water. From a distance, I wasn't sure what I was seeing. When I got closer, I still didn't know. It wasn't until I took the picture, zoomed in, and saw something about golf. What the heck? I've been on the water all summer and haven't seen this.
It turns out, Pier B offers a chance for you to hit golf balls into the water, aiming for the floating pad. They use biodegradable golf balls and sell them for about $5 a ball.
The target basket is situated on two pontoons with a trolling motor attached to keep it in position using GPS.
So why haven't I seen this before? They only do it on Friday and Saturday afternoons, depending on how busy it is in the harbor. Fortunately, in our case, there wasn't anyone swinging. We were close enough to look at it; we could have been hit.
