Minnesota's Como Park Zoo Announces Birth Of Baby Giraffe

In May, Minnesota's Como Park Zoo & Conservatory was happy to announce the birth of a new snow leopard cub. The cub was born on May 6 to parents Alya and Moutig, who had arrived at the zoo in 2017.

At that time, they added that the breeding was carefully planned with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Snow Leopard Survival Plan. Now, a similar announcement has been made involving a different animal.

On Tuesday, the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Facebook page shared the exciting news that they had welcomed a "beautiful baby giraffe."

They added that the yet-to-be-named baby was born on Monday, November 6 at 8:09 p.m. and was already up-and-standing close to mom, Zinnia, by 8:50 p.m.

At the time of the announcement, there had been no confirmation of the gender, height, or weight of the baby giraffe. Como’s animal care team was keeping its distance to allow Zinnia and her baby time to bond behind the scenes.

This is the 3rd calf born to 7-year-old Zinnia. Como’s current herd currently consists of Zinnia, Clover, Skeeter, and the new calf. The zoo had another giraffe, Daisy, who died in March of this year at 23 years old.

FOX 9 reports that the new baby giraffe is the result of carefully planned breeding by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Species Survival Plan, which is the plan that led to their new snow leopard cub that arrived in May.

If you want to see the new giraffe in person, Como Zoo says the baby will likely make its public debut in the next few weeks.
