'Dispensation' For Southeast Minnesota Catholics Coming To An End

Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Catholics in southeast Minnesota who have been permitted to skip weekend services since March 2020 will soon be obligated to attend again.

Bishop John Quinn - leader of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester - formally lifted the obligation last year as the pandemic was in its early stages.

Some parishes began providing live-streamed services and later offered live Masses for limited numbers as Covid restrictions were eased. Most have since returned to pre-pandemic attendance.

But what the bishop called a “general dispensation” from attending services remains in effect, although it will be canceled at the end of the month.

In a letter to his flock, Bishop Quinn wrote:

“Beginning the weekend of July 3-4, I, along with the other Bishops of Minnesota, will reinstate the obligation for Catholics to come to Mass on Sunday, or Saturday evening.”
