Data Reporting Back Log Adds 3 to Olmsted County COVID Death Toll
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Three additional coronavirus deaths involving residents of Olmsted County were reported today.
State health officials note they were among 138 COVID-19 deaths that occurred over the past year but were not reported to the Minnesota Department of Health on a timely basis due to backlogs in private testing labs. A total of 140 deaths were listed in the department's daily update today but only two of those deaths were recent. The discrepancies were discovered during an audit of four labs that report to the state.
Officials say the backlog also resulted in the total number of newly confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases jumping to about 1640. Almost 900 of those cases were due to the reporting backlog. 35 of the previously unreported infections were in Olmsted County, where the total number of known cases since the beginning of the pandemic is closing in on 12,000 and the coronavirus-related death toll is up to 93.
