Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The public transit system in Rochester is no longer charging passengers for rides.

As part of the city's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, starting today, Rochester Public Transit has suspended fare collection on all buses and routes. RPT is also requiring passengers to board and exit buses using the rear door.

The move was made to better protect the bus drivers and passengers from the coronavirus by maintaining safe social distancing. Passengers using wheelchairs and those requiring the use of the ramp to board buses should continue using the front door. RPT also has a limited number of routes that use smaller buses with a single door. Passengers using those buses are being asked to move directly to their seats to minimize their interaction with the driver and other passengers.

The news release says the suspension of fare collection and the alternative boarding requirements are expected to remain in place through the end of the month.
