Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester State Senator Carla Nelson has announced she will place her name on the ballot for the August Republican primary for the First District Congressional seat.

The move suggests Nelson is acknowledging Jim Hagedorn will likely win the Republican Party’s endorsement to seek the seat currently held by Democrat Tim Walz, who is running for Minnesota governor this year. Hagedorn narrowly lost to Walz in the 2016 election and also ran in 2014 after defeating the Republican-endorsed candidate in the primary election.

In making her announcement to extend her campaign past the First District Republican endorsing convention, Nelson pointed to her success in gathering campaign donations, noting her total for the first three months of her campaign is twice as high as Hagedorn’s. She also argued that conservatives throughout the First District deserve a voice in choosing the party’s nominee.
