Be Prepared To Pay Much More To Stay Warm This Winter
Rosemount, MN (KROC AM News) - The largest provider of natural gas in southeast Minnesota has fired a warning shot concerning the upcoming heating season.
Minnesota Energy Resources is advising its customers they will be facing much higher gas bills compared to last winter.
The company blames it on “a nationwide spike in natural gas prices” caused by “tight supplies, as well as a worldwide increase in demand. Minnesota Energy says, "the price of natural gas has more than doubled this year and currently sits at the highest level in a decade.
The company says its recent analysis “predicts the typical residential customer will pay $44 more a month this winter compared to last year. The analysis assumes typical winter weather."
The company notes it operates as a supplier of natural gas, not a producer. That means natural gas is a pass-through expense and it does not earn a profit on what it purchases for its customers.
Due to the sudden jump in prices, the company anticipates some customers may struggle to pay the higher bills. It is reminding its customers that “More Minnesotans than ever before qualify for the state’s Energy Assistance Program.”
The Minnesota Department of Commerce estimates 600,000 households are income-eligible to receive federal funding. Customers can receive up to $1,600 to help pay their energy bills.

Any customers who are having a difficult time paying their energy bill should contact Minnesota Energy Resources as soon as possible to discuss available options including flexible payment plans and budget billing.
