In 1988, George Steinbrenner fired Billy Martin for the fifth time.  His replacement is Lou Piniella.

Here's a very interesting tidbit.  In 1981, Dave Koza scored Marty Barrett on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 33 inning, thus ending the longest game in professional baseball history.  The game had been suspended on April 19 after 32 innings and eight hours, seven minutes of play time. The continuation of the game took only 18 minutes.  Pawtucket beat Rochester 3-2.

And in 1961, Ernie Banks took the bench on a voluntary basis because of a sore knee. This ended his 717 consecutive-games-played streak.
