Today in 1981, Steve Carlton of the Phillies struck out Montreal's Tim Wallach.  Carlton became the sixth major leaguer to strike out 3,000 batters.  He was also the first left-hander to reach the milestone.

A major league record was set in 1986 by Roger Clemens as he struck out 20 batters. The Red Sox beat the Mariners 3-1.

Achieving their first victory of the season in 1988, the Orioles beat the White Sox 9-0. This ended their 21-game losing streak.
