Farmers Share of Thanksgiving Feast 11.9 Cents Per Dollar
Every year before Thanksgiving the National Farmers Union calculates the farmers share of the money Americans spend for their Thanksgiving Feast. This year the farmers share is 11.9 cents per dollar Americans spend on their Thanksgiving dinner. That is slightly below the farmers share in 2019 when it was 12.15 cents.
The National Farmers Union farmers share is based on calculations using the monthly Agricultural Prices from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service and prices of grocery items at the Safeway supermarket. National data is not available for turkeys so data is used as reported by the Contract Poultry Growers Association of Virginias.
You may be wondering about the about other 88 cents of the dollar spent on your Thanksgiving dinner. Where does it go? There is processing the raw agricultural products, packaging, transportation, and retailing costs just to name a few. The debate about whose share it too large compared to the farmers share is a discussion for another day. After all it's Thanksgiving!
