Now that the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo are officially in the books, here's an amazing stat: Olympic team members from Minnesota collectively won more medals than 78 other COUNTRIES.

We're always proud of our Olympic team members who hail from here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, right? And given our long, cold, and snowy winters, it's not surprising that several Minnesotans have won medals during the winter Olympics. (Shout-out to Jessie Diggins, who won gold in 2018 in cross country skiing.) And, according to MPR, in fact, only Colorado and California sent more athletes to the 2018 winter Olympic games in Pyeongchang, South Korea than Minnesota did.

But now, Olympic team members who hail from Minnesota just cleaned up during the 2021 summer Olympic games in Tokyo, too. Sunisa Lee of St. Paul won gold in gymnastics in the women's all-around individuals. Bowe Becker and Michael Andrew won gold in men's swimming while Gable Stevenson won gold in men's freestyle wrestling. And, if you count the victory the U.S. women's basketball team had over Japan in the gold medal round the weekend, Minnesotans Napeesa Collier and Sylvia Fowles are also gold medal winners.

All told, if I'm counting correctly, that makes 6 gold medals the state of Minnesota won during the 2021 Olympics. And that is a LOT. In fact, according to the Olympic Games official Medal Count, with 6 gold medals, Minnesota, if we were an independent country, would be tied with Hungary and the Republic of Korea at 15th in the total gold medal count-- out of 93 total countries competing in the summer games!

That's a pretty impressive total for the North Star State, isn't it? Well done, Minnesota! Keep scrolling to take a look at all the Minnesotans who represented the red, white and blue during the recently completed Tokyo Olympics.
