Mantorville, MN (KROC-AM News) - The process of bringing Lois Riess back to Minnesota has begun.

Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose has announced his office has started the formal extradition process to transfer the 57-year-old Blooming Prairie woman from the custody of the State of Florida to Minnesota, where she faces a first-degree murder indictment for the shooting death of her husband. 54-year-old David Riess was found murdered in the couple’s Blooming Prairie home in March of last year, which triggered what became a nationwide manhunt for his wife.

The path for her return to Minnesota was cleared this week when Lois Riess entered into a plea agreement in Florida and admitted to a first-degree murder charge for killing a Florida woman and assuming her identity while she was on the run in April of last year. In exchange, Florida prosecutors dropped the death penalty and Riess was given a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Sheriff Rose is indicating it may take one to two months to complete the extradition process and bring Riess back to Minnesota to stand trial. The prosecution of the case will be handled by a team from the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.
