The Citizens Utility Board is warning Illinois residents that an increase in ComEd rates is likely coming in the Spring of 2025.

Electricity Rate Increase Coming to Illinois

In my house my husband handles the paying of the bills. No, it's not because I am terrible with money or highly irresponsible. Budgeting is not my forte primarily because  I get far too stressed, (and pi$$ed if I'm being honest), when I have to do it.

You don't need me to tell you that the prices of everything in life are far too high right now, all of our wallets are feeling the pain. A weekly grocery shopping trip had me raging recently, and soon Illinois residents will have to pay more for another vital resource, electricity.

An article from mystateline.com says that according to a recent report from the Citizens Utility Board, ComEd customers can expect a significant price increase starting in June 2025.

Now that we know WHEN we'll begin getting gouged for more money, let's find of WHY.

Why Is a ComEd Rate Increase Coming to Illinois?

Apparently, there was some kind of record-breaking price spike at an electricity capacity auction, which likely means we'll all have to pay the price soon. Literally.

Mystateline.com's article says;

With the capacity auction price spike, CUB Communications Director Jim Chilsen told The Center Square a customer who uses 500-kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity a month would pay $7.50 to $10 extra each month, from June 1st, 2025 to May 31st, 2026.

I will admit I thought the increase would be worse, but I think we can all agree that paying $7 to $10 more a month still SUCKS.

Is There a Way to Avoid the ComEd Rate Increase?

While a ComEd rate increase is still far from a done deal, experts are warning Illinois residents to be on the watch for representatives from alternative energy sources going door-to-door attempting to lure in new customers. There's a lot of sketchy deals out there, so make sure you do a lot of research before signing on any dotted lines!
