The best gas stations for pizza were announced, and much to my surprise, Illinois spots barely made the cut.

Mashed Ranks Top Pizza at the Pump

Mashed rolled out a list of the best places to grab a hot, cheesy slice while pumping gas. While they gave all kinds of props to Wawa, Race Trac, Hunt Brothers, and something called Schindy's, most of those joints aren't exactly easy to find around the state.

Kwik Trip and Kwik Star: Close, But Not Quite Illinois

Kwik Trip also made the list, and yeah, I know they're just over the border in Wisconsin, and Kwik Star is in Rochelle (Kwik Trip's little brother that wants to be part of the action), but for most of us in Illinois, it's not a quick trip to Kwik Trip.

Casey’s Pizza: The Unsung Hero of Midwest Slices

That's OK because they included what I have often referred to to family and friends as probably the most agreeable pizza on the planet, Casey's. You are truly missing out if you haven't tried the Breakfast Pizza at Casey's.

It looks like a quiche with slices you can pick up rather than using utensils, perfect for eating on the go. You can even find round pies sliced into squares at the station for the geometry snobs who find the traditional triangular wedge shape too common for their liking.

More Contenders: Flying J and Other Gas Station Pies

That's not all, as appetizers and plain sausage or pepperoni will do the trick.  Also on the list is Pilot Flying J, but it's hard for me to speak about it because I've never had the pizza before. I guess I'll need to try a slice and get back to you on that one.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
