Model Train Lover’s Dream Now on Display at Rockford’s Nicholas Conservatory
If you’ve ever been captivated by the clickety-clack of a train on its journey, you’re in for a treat. The Sinnissippi Station garden train exhibit at Nicholas Conservatory brings that same magic to life on a miniature scale—and it’s downright enchanting.
What an exciting time to visit Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens in Rockford. Around Christmas, outdoors on the massive conservatory grounds, it's All Aglow.
All Aglow is one of the most enchanting places to find yourself this holiday season and the same feeling is had inside, too!
Sinnissippi Station: A Model Train Lover’s Dream
Growing up with railroad tracks in my backyard, trains weren’t just a mode of transportation; they were the soundtrack to my childhood. My friends and I were self-declared rail enthusiasts—or maybe just kids looking for fun. We’d place coins on the tracks, watching in awe as trains smooshed them into flattened masterpieces. Those coins weren’t just souvenirs; they were tokens of our childhood adventures.
Fast forward to today, and my love for trains has only grown—just in a more miniature sense. That’s why the Sinnissippi Station garden train exhibit at Nicholas Conservatory has me absolutely giddy. Imagine trains and trolleys whizzing around, down, and even above you, all set in a lush tropical garden. The details are incredible, with miniature Rockford landmarks and willow trestle bridges that could rival the real thing.
It’s a magical mix of nostalgia and artistry that’ll make you feel like a kid again. Whether you’re a lifelong train lover or just want to lose yourself in the whimsy of it all, this exhibit is a must-see. And while I don’t recommend putting coins on these tracks, trust me—these tiny trains will still leave you smiling.
As you can see in the Instagram post below from Rockford artist, @vicmonsta, local artists were commissioned to add graffiti to several of the train cars used in the exhibit.
Sinnissippi Station runs through January 26, 2025.
