Northfield, Faribault Mayor Showdowns Determined
Voters in the Rice County cities of Faribault and Northfield determined the finalists for Mayor in their communities during last night's Primary Election.
Unofficially turnout in the county was 17.4 percent or 6,881 total votes cast among 39,588 registered voters. (not counting those who registered on election day)
In Faribault, Thomas J. Spooner received 707 of the total 1,434 total votes cast. Former City Council member Jonathan Wood came in a distant second with 393 votes. Brian C. Peterson garnered 202 votes and Councilman Adama Youhn Doumbouya received 132 votes.
Spooner and Wood move on to the November General Election.
Turnout unofficially was 12.5 percent in Faribault.
Here is the breakdown by precinct:
Precinct 1- Rice County Fairgrounds: Spooner 142, Wood 96, Peterson 61, Doumbouya 24
Precinct 2- Washington Center: Spooner 180, Wood 101, Peterson 41, Doumbouya 27
Precinct 3-Buckham Community Center: Spooner 214, Wood 116, Peterson 60, Doumbouya 45
Precinct 4- Our Savior's Lutheran Church: Spooner 171, Wood 80, Peterson 40, Doumbouya 36.
In Northfield approximately 30.9 percent (4,008) turned out to vote for Mayor with Ruth Dahl achieving the most votes with 1,535. Erica Zweifel was next with 1,320. Rhonda Pownell came in a distant third with 520 votes followed by Timothy Babbini, 295, Adam Gebler 166, George Zuccolotto 149, Michael J. Kirschling 23 votes.
Northfield City Council Ward 2 will have Chad M. Beumer and Emy Farley go to the General Election. Beumer received 704 votes, Farley 341, and Edward Malnar 161. Turnout was about 33.5 percent.
Dakota County District 5 Commissioner seat includes 17 precincts all in Burnsville. Liz Workman got 2,000 of the 3,966 total votes cast and will square off with Yusuf Haji with 994 votes. Bruce Johnson got 618 and Phillip "Phil" M. Sterner garnered 354 votes.
Zumbrota had about a 27 percent voter participation in a vote concerning a question asking if a new community swimming pool should be constructed at a cost not to exceed 3.1 million dollars.
490 yes votes were cast, 205 no votes.
