We all hate to see a mass lay-off situation, especially in our own state, but Illinois recently made it through a lay-off filled month of September.

Across our state, according to numbers provided by IllinoisPolicy.org, over 700 Illinois workers were laid-off from their jobs in September. Of those 781 lay-offs, the biggest share of them came from Amazon closing their Goose Island fulfillment station and laying off 211 employees.

Other companies laying off workers in Illinois last month include:

  • Marquee Event Group, Inc.: 161 workers
  • Cygnus Home Service, LLC: 119 workers
  • DHL Supply Chain: 106 workers
  • Midwest Transport, Inc: 75 workers
  • Genuine Parts Company (in Rockford): 69 workers
  • Community Development Institute Head Start: 40 workers

Amazon May Be Closing Businesses Other Than A Few Of Their Fulfillment Centers

A couple of weeks back, Amazon made the announcement that they would be closing three of their "Go" convenience stores in New York, which would leave the rest of the nation with just 17 of the Amazon stores that feature their "Just Walk Out" technology.

For those unfamiliar, "Just Walk Out" technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) to keep an eye on customers in the store, including tracking the items that the customer chooses, so that the customer can "just walk out" with the items they want without having to stop at the checkout. Purchases are then billed to the customer's credit card.

Over the last year or so, Amazon has cut the number of it's "Go" convenience stores nearly in half, saying that while a handful of the stores were successful, the others weren't because of the economics involved in lease agreements for store fronts.
