Rochester Man Suspected of Killing Sister Takes His Own Life

Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - Winona police say a Rochester man took his own life during a traffic stop Friday night.

A news release says 59-year-old Scott Adam Jenkins was the subject of an alert issued by police in Eau Claire Wisconsin, where Jenkins was identified as the suspect in a homicide. The alert went out to law enforcement agencies in southeastern Minnesota and asked them to locate and detain Jenkins, who was considered to be armed and dangerous.

Winona police reported that an officer on patrol spotted Jenkins' vehicle on Highway 43 in Winona around 8 PM on Friday. The news release says the officer followed the vehicle onto I-90 and then performed a traffic stop.

Winona police reported that the officers involved gave verbal commands for Jenkins to exit the vehicle. After those commands were ignored, the officers approached and found the Rochester man slumped over in the driver's seat and deceased due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  A handgun was located inside the vehicle.

A separate news release issued by the Eau Claire Wisconsin Police Department says officers conducting a welfare check discovered the body of Michelle Jenkins inside her home on the evening of August 29. The statement says she died of multiple gunshot wounds and investigators developed evidence that identified her brother, Scott Jenkins, as the suspect.

The Eau Claire Police Department has reported that Public Safety cameras were used to determine that Scott Jenkins had driven to his sister's residence the day she was killed. Officials say additional tracking methods that were employed with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also led to the conclusion that he was at the victim's home.

The news release says Eau Claire Police detectives were sent to Winona Friday night after receiving word of Scott Jenkins death to collect additional evidence and assist Winona police in their investigation.
