Mankato, MN (KROC-AM News) - A southern Minnesota man who critically wounded his father in a shooting on New Year's Day is not going to prison.

30-year-old Andrew David Douglas was arrested on January 1 after he called 911 and reported that he had shot another man in the arm in self-defense. According to court records, Douglas stated that the shooting victim was "bleeding out."

Blue Earth County deputies rushed to the property in Eagle Lake near Mankato and found Douglas with blood on his clothing and walking out of the mobile home he shared with his father. The criminal complaint in the case says the deputies then found his 59-year-old father holding his badly disfigured right arm inside the mobile home.

The court document says the deputies asked him who was responsible for his injuries and the father stated, more than once, "I can't believe he did this," and blamed his son. The charges alleged the shooting occurred after the father confronted his son about some missing or stolen jewelry.

The law enforcement reports on the incident stated the father was transported to the hospital to be treated for what was described as a life-threatening gunshot wound.

Douglas earlier entered a guilty plea to a first-degree assault charge. At his sentencing hearing Monday afternoon, he was given a stayed 86 month prison sentence and was placed on probation for five years. The sentencing order also included a 275 day jail sentence, but he was given credit for the 275 days he has already spent in jail.

The sentencing order in the case indicates the Blue Earth County Attorney's Office objected to the downward departure from state sentencing guidelines. The document says the judge agreed to the reduce sentenced after finding Douglas was particularly amenable to probation and treatment. It also states that he has shown remorse and accepts responsibility for his actions.
