Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - Bail has been set at $300,000 for a Minnesota woman accused of a hit-and-run that killed a teenage boy and seriously injured his younger sister.

27-year-old Mikala Ness of Oakdale was formally charged today in Hennepin County Court with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of criminal vehicular operation. The charges allege she was driving drunk last Friday evening when her car struck and fatally injured 17-year-old Donald Gayton Jr. His 14-year-old sister, Tamya, was rushed to a hospital with what police described as severe injuries.

She later told investigators that she and her brother walked to a nearby store in Bloomington from their family's apartment in Richfield and were walking back home when they were hit by the vehicle while trying to cross a street around 6 PM on Friday. The vehicle that struck the two siblings did not stop but was located about a mile and a half away near the Mall of America.

Ness was the lone occupant of the car and told police she had been driving home from a holiday party. The arresting officer noted her speech was slurred and her breath had the odor of alcohol. The criminal complaint says a preliminary breath test put her blood-alcohol-concentration at .13.

The charges also say the motorist who called 911 after encountering Ness following her car crash near the Mall of America, told police that she walked over to his vehicle crying and stated that she had hit two people with her car and killed somebody. When she was asked about it by the arresting officer, the criminal complaint says Ness responded by saying, "I feel like I did, but I don't know."
