MnDOT is overseeing a pair of transformative projects that began this year along the interstate. A project to rebuild I-90’s interchange with Hwy. 52 southeast of Rochester started earlier this month.
MnDOT has since announced that off ramps from the freeway to southbound Hwy. 52 will close until November. Multiple detours are in place for I-90 traffic seeking southbound Hwy. 52.
I-90 Detour Starts in Austin, MN Wednesday Evening
Further west, another detour associated with a project to replace multiple bridges in Austin begins on Wednesday.
Crews are set to conduct beam setting on the Oakland Ave. overpass in western Austin. The work will require the closure of the interstate in both directions.
Traffic will be sent up the Oakland Ave. exit ramp and returned to the interstate via the onramp at the interchange.
A MnDOT news release says the overnight closure and detour is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and end by 6:00 Friday morning.
The beam setting is part of a three-year project to replace or repair six overpasses along I-90 in Austin. Traffic through the corridor has been reduced to one lane since the work began.
The other bridges being addressed by the project are:
I-90 over Sixth Street Northeast, rehabilitate in 2024-2025
I-90 over Cedar River, replace in 2024-2025, traffic impacts started May 31
Fourth Street Northwest, replace in 2024-2025,
14th Street Northwest (Highway 218 north), replace in 2026
21st Street Northeast (Highway 218 south), replace in 2026
Work on the bridge replacements and repairs this year is expected to last through the Fall. The massive project is scheduled to be completed by 2026.
