2nd Murder Charge Filed Against MN Man in Death of Pregnant Woman
Hastings, MN (KROC-AM News)- Dakota County prosecutors have filed a second murder charge against the St. Louis Park man accused of fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend outside of the Amazon warehouse in Lakeville.
32-year-old Donte McCray was formally charged on January 10 with second-degree murder for the death of 31-year-old Kyla Fletcher, who was also from St. Louis Park. She was found suffering from a single gunshot wound to her deck and was rushed to the Hennepin County Medical Center where she died as a result of the January 8 shooting, the charges say.
The amended criminal complaint, filed Monday in Dakota County Court, says doctors at HCMC performed a C-section on Fletcher and were able to deliver the baby boy named Messiah. The boy was suffering limited brain activity due to oxygen deprivation caused by the gunshot wound to Fletcher. Messiah was taken off life support and died on January 17.
Court documents allege the fatal shooting occurred only hours after the couple broke up over accusations of infidelity. The investigation determined McCray left the home he had shared with the victim and went to his mother's home on Sunday, but for some reason, the victim then gave him a ride to the Amazon facility where he worked.
McCray initially claimed the fatal shooting was an accident and occurred after he discovered he had guns in his bag and he wanted to "clear" of firearms of any live rounds of ammunition.
The criminal complaint states that, after he was confronted with a video recording from a surveillance camera that did not reflect his version of the events, McCray admitted to investigators that he pointed one of his guns at Fletcher and pulled the trigger after he became angry when she backed her car up in the parking lot and an open car door struck him.
McCray is now facing two counts of second-degree murder with intent not premeditated. His next hearing is set for February 16.
