Listeria Contamination Alert: Are These Popular Dips In Your Fridge?
You may remember the recalls that recently happened regarding dips that could be contaminated with listeria. In August, a Houston-based company called JFE Franchising Inc. made the recall for safety reasons on more than a dozen food products.
Now, the FDA has upgraded the recall to a Class 1 risk. Class 1 is reserved for serious issues, that there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
The recalled products are salsa and guacamole products. If you have any of these in your possession, or if you have been ill, you may want to contact your healthcare professional.
THE RISKS OF CONTRACTING LISTERIA
People who eat food that has been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can get listeriosis, which is a serious infection that mostly affects:
- Young children
- Elderly,
- Frail individuals
- People with weakened immune symptoms.
- Pregnant women and their newborns.
FATAL ILLNESS FOR CERTAIN GROUPS
Listeria infections can be fatal for young children, and can also cause stillbirths and miscarriages.
SYMPTOMS FOR GENERAL PUBLIC
For healthy people, symptoms may include:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Stiffness
- Nausea
- Abdominal Pain
- Diarrhea
