Here’s What Happens if Minnesota Governor Walz Becomes VP Candidate
Buzz is starting to build around Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as a potential running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris, but what happens if he is picked?
Several news outlets are reporting that Walz has made it onto the shortlist of top candidates to join Harris on the 2024 Presidential ticket for the Democrats. A decision will need to be made soon though, the Dems have their convention right around the corner and a running mate will need to be picked before that gets underway.

A 2023 poll found that Walz has an approval rating of 54% among Minnesota voters, and Minnesota is an important state for Harris to win if she wants to win the election, so Walz could certainly help lock down Minnesota.
But if he is selected, what happens next? As the Vice Presidential nominee, Walz could continue to do his job as Governor of Minnesota, but due to his increased time spent on the campaign trail, he might have to delegate more duties to others, like Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, or other top officials.
Big and historical things would happen in Minnesota if Walz becomes the Vice President with a Harris win in November. Walz would need to resign as Governor of Minnesota, and that would instantly make Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, the first female Governor of Minnesota.
Flanagan would join a small group of United States Governors under the age of 50, she is only 44, so as of today, that would make her the second-youngest Governor behind the 41-year-old Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas.
