Another Text Scam Circulating In Small Town Minnesota

Sigh. Another scam has been reported, this time in northern Minnesota. This scam isn't groundbreaking but it does look legitimate upon first glance.

This scam was reported not too far from Duluth, in Grand Marais. Officials with Cook County shared a warning to residents on their Facebook page recently.

You'd think we would have seen it all when it comes to scams these days, considering there is seemingly a new one popping up every week.

However, this one is worth mentioning because even the local officials think it looks pretty convincing!

This scam works two different ways: you get a text or you get a call, both with a scammer posing as someone from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

In the text version of this scam, you get a pretty convincing screenshot of a message from MnDot, stating that you have a bill to your name for using the express lane and will be charged $35 bucks in late fees if you don't pay up.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation recently warned about this scam and this exact same screenshot back in June.

They weren't kidding, as this scam has now popped up very close to home. Take a look at said screenshot so you don't get scammed in the future! Of course, there's a link that takes you to a website where you can 'pay' the fine - in this case, the scammer.

Scammers are also calling locals as well. Cook County officials say someone who reported the scam in the area blocked the number but still got five different calls after the fact with the same scam.

These scammers go to great lengths to get a little bit of money. As always, don't click links if you aren't absolutely sure they are real. I always ignore them, even if they look real. If it's truly important, you'll get notified again.
