What's more American than fireworks on the 4th of July? Well, plenty of things, apparently, if you're going to be spending your Independence Day holiday in Minnesota's capital city, that is.

Yes, that's right, Saint Paul (my favorite of Minnesota's Twin Cities)-- our state's capital, mind you-- will not be putting on any fireworks shows during this 4th of July.

I know, right?!? Is that even legal?!? So much for the famed 'rocket's red glare'!

So what's up with getting rid of 4th of July fireworks in Minnesota's capital citiy?!? Well, according to Saint Paul's new mayor, Melvin Carter, fireworks are just too darn expensive. In this TwinCities.com story, the mayor says he looked at the budget and given cutbacks that might have to be made in many other areas, he can't justify the expensive fireworks show.

"As I’ve considered the budgetary priorities we manage across our city in the first year of my administration, I’ve decided I can’t in good conscience support spending tax dollars on a fireworks display in Saint Paul this year," the mayor posted on his Twitter feed yesterday.

Of course, the story said he didn't rule out the possibility of a private donation funding the city's fireworks show this year-- though, if you ask me, there's not a whole lot of time for that-- the 4th of July is next Wednesday.

If you want to see fireworks, though, you can see plenty of them right here in our own neck of the woods here in southeast Minnesota. (Check out the full list HERE).
