Monday night, the Rushford-Peterson Trojans hosted Lewiston-Altura in high school volleyball action. Aside from that, they were hosting the first game at the new gym at the new school. It's a nice place.

R-P vs L-A in New Gym

The visiting Cardinals put up a good fight, and their athleticism kept them in most of the games. It was tough to go against the bigs of the older team, but we were all tied up at 20-20 in set one before R-P scored 3 more points for a 5-0 run. In not too much more time, the Trojans won their first set on their home court, 25-22.

It was a great atmosphere on both sides, and the R-P faithful loved the first set victory. These teams really compete, and in set two, the score was tied every point until 5-5. Rushford-Peterson went on a 7-1 run at that point, and eventually increased the lead to 20-12. But of course, Lewiston-Altura took advantage of some mistakes, and went on a run of their own, with Madison Mundt coming up big a number of times. A 5-1 run meant just a 21-17 deficit, then down 24-18, a 4-0 was all they could get, and R-P took set two on their new home.

I said before set number three that it looked like Lewiston-Altura would have a pretty good chance to take set three; the Cardinals are no pushovers. We started with some early ties, then a 5-1 run got the road team to a 8-4 lead. Ciarra McNally was all over the place for L-A. Gabby Speltz also got some big ace serves for the Cardinals in this set. The lead was up to 19-12 before the Trojans went on their run. A 7-0 run got R-P the tie; then the lead to 22-20. Lewiston-Altura had one more run in them though, scoring the final 5 points to take the match to at least four.

In set four, the Trojans were the ones going on the 4-0 and 3-0 runs. One big play up front by Lauren Lawston may have stopped some potential Cardinal momentum, and two Trojans had back to back ace serves: Nicole Blagsvedt, who added another later, and Kensay Clobes, who helped put set four away for a 25-15 victory and the 3-1 match victory over Lewiston-Altura.
