Submitted by Ben Aberg.  We were given a great battle last night in high school volleyball action on Cool 104! The Southland Rebels came to Chatfield to take on the Gophers in Three Rivers Conference play. The composition of each team was completely different from a year ago-the Chatfield Gophers lost six seniors and the Southland Rebels lost 11 seniors from last year.

The Chatfield crowd was ready, and team came out and took set one 25-20. There was a lot of back in forth in the second set won by Southland 25-22. Lily Riddles, battling through a hurt ankle, got in for a couple ace serves. The Southland Rebels were getting a lot of good play from the front row, with Brianna Johnson and Kaysie Allen a real presence as the match went on. The third set was a 25-10 rout by Southland. On to number four, after 5 early ties, Chatfield got the lead and held on 25-23 to send it to five. Kyra Dokken really got active on the attack to keep Chatfield moving on to play a full five. The fifth and final set was a 15-7 blowout-Southland was scoring off the serves by Katelyn Luthe-three ace serves in a row put the game out of reach and gave Southland their first win on the year.

The KVGO Subway Player of the Game for the Chatfield Gophers was given to Mariah Bell, with a great serving night and activity throughout the contest on the attack as well. The Subway Player of the Game for the Southland Rebels was Brianna Johnson. Johnson used her height and quick reaction to lead the team in kills and send some down on the blocks-she was a big distraction for the Gophers up front on many plays. The Kingsley Mercantile Game Ball was given to Katelyn Luthe. Luthe really came through in the 5th set with great serving to set it up for a 15-7 win in the fifth set, and the first match Southland won this year.
