For my entire life, I have known our region to be called "Southeast Minnesota". Everyone across the state has referred to us that way, and now they want to change it.

Well...sorta.

"Name Our Region" is an initiative by Journey To Growth, SE MN Together, the University of Minnesota Ext., the Southeast Minnesota League of Municipalities and Community Economic Development Associates.

By naming the region, the Southeast Minnesota area will be able to promote ourselves collectively, keep us competitive within the national and global market help retain and attract residents and talent in our communities.

Southeast Minnesota is made up of many counties including Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Steele, Wabasha and Winona.

They have actually narrowed down the name of our section of the state to three "finalist"

  • "South by Southeast (SXSE)"
  • "Innovation Valley: Where Great Ideas Grow"
  • "Venture Southeast Minnesota"

Will people actually start to refer to our beautiful corner of the state with these names, or will Southeast Minnesota stick with us forever?
