Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -  The chilly weekend forecast has prompted the Rochester Salvation Army to open its Winter Warming Center on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Homeless people in the community are invited to visit the Salvation Army Community Center at 20 1st Avenue Northeast from 7 PM through 7 AM. Light meals, shower, and laundry facilities will be available, along with cots for anyone wishing to spend the night.

The Salvation Army opens the Warming Center when the temperature is predicted to reach zero degrees or lower. Last year, it was open on 26 nights and served an average of 35 people per night.

“The people that come to the warming center are so grateful to have a warm, safe place to stay,” said Alex Hurlebaus, Case Worker & Warming Center Coordinator at the Rochester Salvation Army, “We are always looking for more people willing to volunteer to help run the warming center. The greatest gift you can give to these people is your time.”

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Alex at 507-288-3663 to fill out a volunteer application.
