A Rochester man is heading to England Friday to defend his world powerlifting title.

Steve Boring is the current world champion in one of the categories of the Amateur World Powerlifting Congress and expects to compete Sunday.

(We sat down and chatted with Steve before he headed out to defend his title. Click the arrow to check out the interview.)

Boring - the fitness director at the Rochester Athletic Center - won the world event last year by bench pressing 419 pounds. Last year Boring won the national title by pressing 414 pounds. He successfully defended that title in April with the same weight.

Boring - who weighs under 240 pounds - is thinking about an attempt of 430 pounds when he competes Sunday.

Boring says the powerlifting sport is gaining in popularity, especially among females. Boring competes only in the bench pressing category. The other categories are deadlifting and squats.

He became interested in powerlifting when he was 7-years-old and has been competing ever since. He says he was so focused when he was in high school he skipped his junior and senior proms so he could compete in organized events.

Good luck, Steve!
