La Crosse, WI (KROC-AM News) - The National Weather Service has posted the season’s first Spring Flooding Outlook and it shows that the potential for flooding in the region during the spring thaw is near or slightly above normal.

The Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota is among the areas that have above normal flood potential, but future precipitation is the main driver of that risk. The report says soil moisture across the region is high because of the heavy rains last summer and into the early fall and many rivers are still experiencing above normal levels for this time of the year, but the below normal snow pack will help lessen the risk of flooding.

The highest risk of flooding is in the Wabasha area where the National Weather Service puts the potential for minor flooding on the Mississippi River at 65 percent, while the chances of moderate flooding is pegged at 18 percent and there is a 12 percent chance of major flooding.

The potential for flooding on the Zumbro River in Rochester is estimated at less than five-percent.
