St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation is making it easier for people to access real-time information about road conditions.

The agency has added a “plow cams” feature to the 511mn.org website and the MNDOT 511 app. It allows people to view images from cameras placed in snowplows, providing them with another tool for making good decisions about their travel plans during inclement weather.

Kelly Braunig, 511 program manager says, “If they go on the 511 site and see that travel is not advised, they can actually see an image of the road the cameras take as the plow is traveling. Seeing is believing.”

MNDOT has ordered 200 of the cameras, but not all of them have been installed and tested. Officials also note the active trucks displayed on 511 only represent a portion of MnDOT’s fleet for snow and ice and other maintenance activities.

The images from the plow cams can be accessed on the left menu of the 511 website by clicking on “Plow Cameras.”
