Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed Sunday, August 19 to be Lindsay Whalen day across the state after Whalen annouced her retirement earlier this week.

The Hutchinson, Minnesota native is a five-time WNBA All-Star, four-time WNBA champion as well as holding the WNBA records in wins at 322. Sunday will mark the Lynx final regular season game of the year before they head to the playoffs.

It marks the end of an era for the state of Minnesota, but we don't have to worry as Whalen is not going to go far as she will be the head women's basketball coach at the University of Minnesota starting next season.

Here is what Dayton had to say about Whalen according to the Lynx:

“Lindsay Whalen is a phenomenal champion and an inspiration to sports fans here in Minnesota and across the country. Throughout her career, she has shown exceptional talent, determination, teamwork, and leadership,” said Governor Dayton. “It has been a thrill to watch Lindsay and the Minnesota Lynx win four WNBA championships. I look forward to following her continued success as the University of Minnesota Women’s Basketball Coach. Congratulations, Lindsay. Minnesota is enormously proud of you!”

Whalen and the Lynx are attempting to win back to back WNBA Championships.
