Wayzata, MN (KROC AM News) -  A metro police officer who was fatally injured Friday after being struck by a car has local connections.

Wayzata Officer William Matthews was clearing debris from a road when he was hit by a car whose driver has a criminal record that includes numerous traffic offenses. In fact, police say Beth Freeman was driving without a license because it had been revoked.

Matthews graduated from Pine Island High School and attended the law enforcement program at RCTC. He earned a law enforcement degree from Winona State University. He served as a reserve officer with the Winona Police Dept and also worked as an intern with the Rochester PD. He also worked part-time with the Olmsted County and Goodhue County Sheriff’s Offices. He was hired by the Zumbrota Police Dept in 1998.

He had been with the Wayzata PD for nine years.

Matthews was married and the father of a 7-year-old son. His funeral has been scheduled for Thursday in Wayzata.
