Both Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were working through public divorces last year when they met on The Voice, and Stefani says getting to know Shelton pulled her out of a dark place.

The former No Doubt frontwoman reveals in an interview with CBS This Morning that finding someone who understood her plight was deeply meaningful for her.

“In all of this craziness that happened, all of this unexpected horribleness, I found a friend that was going through literally the exact same thing as me,” Stefani says. “That is a miracle, and it just saved me so much. I feel so grateful for that."

The artist talked more about writing her new record, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, while going through that dark time and coming out on the other side after having started dating Shelton.

“It was so fun to be able to write about being saved and be happy about it and share that joy,” she explains, speaking of her upbeat single “Make Me Like You,” which she has confessed is about Shelton.

Though Setfani doesn’t outright say anything else about her relationship with the country star or her divorce, she says the record sums it up pretty well. “Look, you can have me say it out loud, or you could just listen to the record,” she insists. “I feel like I did everything right to say, ‘I’m not going to let this ruin my life.’"

Stefani’s record was released on Friday (March 18), and Shelton showed his support by purchasing five copies of the CD. Shelton will also release a personal new album, titled If I'm Honest, this spring.
